For this task, I chose to analyse an article from the guardian. ‘Parents talk to your sons about Andrew Tate – we teachers cant take him on alone’ – Lola Okolosic.
This article is not only a news story but an opinion piece, it discusses a current issue within the media of Andrew Tate, the viral, dangerous and misogynistic ‘influencer’. This article is a teacher expressing her concerns over the damage his platform could do and warning people and parents of the danger.
As a news story it has many things to make it newsworthy, it has controversy, themes of conflict, curiosity of not only the writer but audiences and a want for change. Throughout the writer shares feelings of curiosity ‘How had a man who many of us had never heard of until last summer garnered such a huge following, resulting in his content on TikTok being viewed more than 12.7bn times?’ she asks questions to the audience about how it has gotten to this point, begging for change.
I think the fact she herself is a teacher offers a more personalised version of this story, she is shaping young minds and if she is coming out and stating this man as dangerous audiences are more likely to trust and feel emotional about the piece.
As an opinion piece, it’s very well done. A clear opinion on the story has been stated and backed up with relevant information and statistics. For example, statistics say that ‘around 50% of children see violent porn before the age of 18’. All hard hitting facts that would raise concern to the target audiences. Not only this but this article offers a solution, and presents an opportunity for change, she writes that ‘Our first step may be to think through what these unprecedented times mean for our children’.
